Hopscotch - Lessons Learned




Taught the neighborhood kids how to play hopscotch - of course they caught on right away!

We didnt get as far as how to throw your small stone onto a particular number. They just followed me on the 1, 2-3, 4, 5-6, 7, 8-9 10 with great glee. I left them streaming across the colored chalk grid.

They were so enchanted I didnt have the heart to explain to them they were "supposed" to turn around and go backwards also and they "should" use small stones.

We all won this game.

I grew up with a different version:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4/5 - 6 - 7/8 - 9 - 10

I try to adapt to the new things.

One of my great disadvantages was growing up in a neighborhood with very few children my own age - I never learned how to play hop-scotch. Question: Are children's traditional games dying out due to tv/video/cd/internet? Has anyone established The Committee For The Preservation of Traditional Children's Games?

I bet that they are dying out, which is too bad. I certainly loved hopscotch as a kid... actually i still do :)
